Luck cycles: why your thirties can feel nothing like your twenties.
One of the most common things people say when they first look at their own chart properly: that's exactly when things changed. Not vaguely — a specific stretch of years where work, health or relationships shifted register, and they've never quite been able to explain why.
In bazi, that stretch has a name. It's called a luck pillar or luck cycle (大運, da yun), and the system divides a life into consecutive ten-year blocks of them.
What a luck cycle actually is
Your natal chart is fixed — eight characters, set at birth, never changes. The luck cycle is the moving part. Starting from your birth month pillar, the calendar is stepped forward (or backward, depending on your year polarity and sex) in ten-year increments. Each of those steps hands you a new stem-and-branch pair that sits alongside your natal chart for a decade and changes the elemental balance of the whole reading.
So nothing about you changed at 32. What changed is the environment the chart is being read against. A chart that was starved of water for a decade and then gets a water luck pillar is the same chart in different weather.
The handover years
Luck pillars don't start on your birthday. They start at a computed age — often something odd like 3, or 7, or 9 — and then run every ten years from there. Which is why so many people report their disruptive years clustering at, say, 27, 37, 47 rather than at the round decade birthdays everyone braces for.
The two or three years around a handover are usually where the noise is. The outgoing pillar is losing grip and the incoming one hasn't settled. People change jobs, cities, relationships in these windows more than the surrounding years — and often describe it afterwards as a period where they didn't feel like themselves.
Three layers, not one
A common beginner error is treating the ten-year pillar as the whole story. In practice a reading stacks at least three moving layers:
- The luck pillar (大運) — the decade you're in. Sets the weather.
- The annual pillar (流年) — this year. Sets the season within that weather.
- The month pillar — the current solar term. Sets the specific fortnight-to-month texture.
A difficult decade with a supportive year is a very different experience from a supportive decade with a difficult year, and the month layer is where most people actually feel the difference day to day. Any reading that gives you one number for "your luck" has flattened three layers into one and thrown away the useful part.
What the system is honest about
Luck cycles describe conditions, not events. A chart can say the coming decade favours output over accumulation — which is a real, usable observation about where your energy will actually pay off. It cannot tell you that you will be promoted in November. Practitioners who claim the second thing are overreaching well past what the method supports, and traditional texts are surprisingly candid about this.
The useful posture is planning, not prophecy: if the next decade favours building rather than harvesting, plan a decade of building and stop measuring yourself against a harvest that isn't scheduled yet.
